Google Inc. has defended the search fiasco that it just went through owing to the three black teenagers image search. While the three black teenagers keyword fetched the images of criminals and mug shots, the search for three white teenagers, brought back the images of smiling teenagers. Google Inc has stated that this was the result put through by the search algorithm they had implemented. There was nothing intentional in it, while the internet has gone on to claim that Google is being racist in its searches.
The whole thing started when a guy named Kabir Alli searched images for the text three black teenagers on Google using its image search feature. While the three black teenagers keyword yielded results of criminals and mug shots, the reverse keyword three white teenagers returned stock images of smiling kids in the very best resolutions. Kabir Alli posted this on twitter and since then the twitter media has been pretty much ruffed up with the discussion.
In a defense to the situation, the search engine giant stated, “Our image search results are a reflection of content from across the web, including the frequency with which types of images appear and the way they’re described online. This means that sometimes unpleasant portrayals of sensitive subject matter online can affect what image search results appear for a given query. These results don’t reflect Google’s own opinions or beliefs – as a company, we strongly value a diversity of perspectives, ideas and cultures.”
The situation over the three black teenagers keyword search has put Google again in the position where the search engine giant is being referred to as racially biased. This is not the first time that Google Inc, has been accused of being racially biased. In the past also, the keyword beautiful dreadlocks only showed the results of white people, that lead to quite a controversy.
Google possibly has take a steps to hold on to the impact as the search terms three black teenagers and three white teenagers have started to show some sort of balance.
