The end product obtained through this reaction was a weak polymer with some extra sulphur linkages. Further, the scientists carried out experiments using related organo sulfur compounds and diphenyl sulfide.
Polyphenylene sulfide is polymerized by using polycondensation reaction of para-dichlorobenzene and sodium sulfide or sodium hydrosulfide in a polar solvent under elevated temperatures. This polymer is created by a combination of various elements, including dehydration reaction, sodium chloride removal reaction, exothermic reaction and high temperature pressurization reaction. This process is very capital intensive due to the high cost of equipments and energy consumption.
